My Visit to the Tennessee State Capitol: Jose

L to R: Kaylea, Nila, Jose at TN State Capitol for Disability Day
Hello,
I'm Jose Cantu. Yesterday,  I went to Tennessee State Capitol to meet with a couple of important people to bring our concerns about transportation for  people with disabilities.
My job was to introduce myself and my classmates to each political leader.

"I was happy all day." said Jose, "I got to do something really fun and important with my friends." "I liked introducing myself to everyone."

"It was a great day." - Jose

IHS Transition II Goes to State Capitol: Transportation Lobby

Today,  Independence Transition II teacher Mrs. Huffmaster took three of our IHS Transition II students to the state capitol. The students went to the Tennessee Capitol to meet many of our Senators and Representatives. The students brought questions relating to their concerns for their present and future experiences.

Their main concern related to transportation and the great need that all persons with disabilities desire more availability of public transportation within our county. Each student that attended; Jose, Nila and Kaylea greeted and presented their questions to each politician. The students met Senator Jack Johnson, Representative Glen Casada and a couple of representatives from the finance department.

Jose said, "It was so fun and a good day." "I like meeting the different politicians." Jose main responsibility was to introduce himself and his classmates to each politician that they met.

Nila presented a short speech about the need for public transportation for people with disabilities within our county. The main reason comes from the growth in population wtihin our county within the last eight years and within the next 20 years will be above 144%. Nila also enjoyed meeting the Senator and Representative for our county. "I liked meeting the politicians," Nila said.

After Nila's presentation, it was Kaylea's turn to present a letter to each Senator or Representative that outlined all of the students concerns and brought about facts to hopefully encourage them to support a bill currently being looked at to help with the financial part of more transportation.

The students did a great job representing Independence High School and Williamson County.

Disability Day on the Hill: A letter to the Senators

Dear Senator:

I represent Williamson County Schools and District 23.  I am excited to be a part of Disability Day on the Hill.  I come from Independence High School to talk to you about the need for increased availability of affordable and reliable public transportation in our community.

Currently Williamson County does provide the Franklin Trolley/TODD through Franklin Transit Authority but this system is only available in the Franklin city limits.  My classmates and I live in the cities of Thompson Station and Spring Hill and no such transportation is available to us.

The school district has provided me on the job training for the past 3-4 years.  As a student I am able to access transportation to and from my job sites on a daily basis through the school system.  When I reach the age of 22 I will no longer have access to these resources.  I am concerned that whatever job I have at that time, I will no longer be able to access, because I am not able to drive.

I am excited to hear that the state is beginning to plan an increase public transportation and I would like to ask you to support the following:

·         Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) as proposed by AMP

·         2035 Regional Transportation Plan

Williamson County will increase in population by 144% between 2006 and 2035. Also Williamson County Schools have recognized a significant and ongoing increase in students with special needs.  The students entering school in 2014 will have graduated and be vital community members by the time the 2035 Regional Transportation Plan is completed.  The need for public transportation to allow me and my peers to go to work and engage in my community is greatly needed

Please remain mindful of the ever growing need for transportation among adults with disabilities and join with me in supporting public transportation initiatives.

Community Day: B-Dubs, Walmart, Kohls

Today we went on our community experience day. Some shopped at Kohl's while other students went to Wal-mart to but the ice coffee for the IHS "Common Grounds" coffee shop. After our excursions we all met up and went to Buffalo Wild Wings for a great time together and have lunch. The food was delicious. Some students even tried some very HOT wings. Today's choice was the mango habanero. It was HOT and spicy!! The sauce brought tears to their eyes but they love it!
Upon returning to the school, the students help cheered their Eagles at the Pep rally.

K's Day....

Hello,
This is Kaylea and I had a really good day today. Today our class went shopping at Target for Valentine's day items for our photo booth we are going to have here at school for all the students and staff to take pictures. It will also help us raise funds for our program.
I had lunch with my class at Moe's. I had chicken taco salad, "It was yummy in my tummy!"
In class we discussed about our state government and how it affect us.
I had a really great time today.

IHS Goes to Washington....Not quite....TN Capitol

On January 28, 2014 IHS Transition II students and staff will spend the day at Tennessee Capitol building . They will represent WCS at the TN State Legislature and get the opportunity to see our state leaders in action. Students will be able to see how bills become laws. Also, students that attend will have a time to meet with our local represenatives and ask them questions that relate to their concerns and needs towards a better life.

Ashley discribing to the class about her experiences about housing
Nila and Jose having a good time coming up with questions

Currently, our students are brainstorming in class on possible questions that they would like to ask our Senators and Representatives. Some of the areas that they are currently working on our transportation, housing, job placements opportunities, education, etc. Discussions have led to more understanding about how our government works for the betterment of its citizens. Plus, it has allowed our students the opportunity to express their concerns and dreams for their future. Each day that we practice and learn more about our government, the more they are getting excited to attend this special day.
Questions that our students have come up with to ask our state legislature

Tractor Supply - 1/16/14

Today our IHS Transition II students went out into the local community to a couple of job sites. One of those sites was Tractor Supply Co in Thompson's Station, TN. Three of our students; Nila, Kaylea, and Jose really enjoy going to work here a couple of days a week. They dust, stock, and organize the clothes.

Each student is given a section to make sure they place the clothes in the correct size order and style. Then they separate the clothes on the rack to make the racks look nice. Jose's favorite thing is to place the boots in order on the shelves. Today the students organized the toy racks as well. All the little toys were put in place according to the labels on the shelves. The labels had the price and picture of each animal, car, truck, tractor, etc.
This store really appreciates the hard work that each of these students do each time they come. It's a great store and has just about everything you need.

My Not So Bad Day

This morning I was thinking about running away.
On the bus I got so upset I threw up.
I asked the bus driver to call 911.
When I got to school I went to the nurse and then I laid down.
I spoke to my teacher and Mrs. Anton, my principal.
Then I made a good choice.
I got up off the ground and said "I am done."
I didn't need to be by myself anymore.
I came in to class.
I started drawing and spent my day with my teacher.
Now I am happy.

This morning, I realized my family wouldn't like how I was acting.
Now I get to go home and know my family will be happy to see my face.
