The WCS Winter Holiday party was a huge success!
A big thank you to Tazikis Mediterranean Cafe, Captain D's, Padrino's Pops, Kroger, Dreams Do Come True Princess Parties, Santa, Anthony Swank (professional photographer) and Full Life Church.  All of the generosity of our community partners really made the day special for the Transition II students of WCS.

Today the students got a special treat. We had a guest artist from the community come into the class and walk us through painting a Winter picture for their parents.  

Every student got the opportunity to create a masterpiece!

Each picture is a little different but they are all beautiful.

This is our guest teacher, local artist, Kristen Reed.  

JR LOVED painting.  When he finished his picture he just kept painting on plain paper.  

It is nice to find new activities the students enjoy doing.

Sprout Film Festival 2014 in Franklin, Tn

We attended the film festival in Franklin, TN. in the downtown theater.  The films were made by people with dissabilities about poeple with dissabilities.  Some were funny and some were inspirational, but most were stories that were from the heart.  My favorite film was called "LOVE" and it was about a little boy and a little girl.  The little boy was about 3 years old and had a dissibility and he had an older sister.  The film was about there relationship.  I liked the ending because the little boy was asked why he loved his sister, and he said he loved grilled cheese.

I attended the Film Festival with my Gram and it was so good!

Transition 2 Fall Party--We're off to see the wizard!

On Friday October 17 the IHS Transition II Students and staff attended the WCS Transition II Fall Harvest Party at Williamson County AG Expo. All schools were asked to dress up in costumes for the celebration. The IHS class decided to dress up as different characters from the movie "The Wizard of Oz." Prior to the students and staff leaving for the Fall Festival they all wanted to make sure they took pictures of themselves dressed up in their Wizard of Oz costumes that they made. The students and staff designed and made their cosutmes from supplies they had in class. They learned how to sew, paint, and cut out all of their materials. Some brought outfits from home to wear with the rest of their costumes they designed for the party.

The students had a blast at the Harvest Party. Ben McNeese "I really liked the party." The students danced to music and ate desserts and enjoyed some social time with other students from across the county. "I danced to the music, it was fun" according to Ben McNeese.

Ben loved to dress up as the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz. He also performed for everyone his favorite dance at the party, "I did the Macarena."

For Kaylea Dunkin her favorite part of the party was dressing up as Glenda and experiencing the hay ride  "I loved going on the hay ride." "I loved to dance at the party." "The party was fun" according to Kaylea. 

For the staff and students it was a great time to dress up in costumes and socialize with other students and staff from across the county. There was dancing, music, games, food, and a ton of fun for all that attended.

Ashley's Halloween Story: The Visit To The House On The Hill

The Visit to The House On The Hill

Two little girls ages 6 and 7 are going trick or treating. One knocked on the door of the house on the hill and they both said “Trick or treat!” This old lady stood at the door and said, “We don’t trick or treat here.” The girls were sad. So the old lady invited them in and then she said a prayer over them. Then the girls yawned and said, “we’d better go home.” But the old lady said, “no, I’ve got pajamas in the guest room.” So the girls decided to stay. Before the girls were fast asleep, the old lady came in and gave them a treat. What the girls didn’t know was that the old lady poisoned the candy treat. The girls were missed by their families and they asked their neighbors to help them find their daughters. They decided to make a visit to the house on the hill. When the old lady came to the door she hit the front window of the house and they could see what looked like the little girl’s hair in her mouth. They said, “Oh my, she definitely got them!”

Special Olympics Bowling

Today the Transition 2 class went to Special Olympics Bowling in Franklin. The students and staff competed with other schools from the county in the 2014 Special Olympics Bowling tournament. We all had a blast and a great time.  Our students bowled very well in their age brackets and divisions.  Afterwards, some of our students enjoyed the arcade area as we waited for our bus to arrive. It was a fun filled day full of social interaction, athletic competition, and relaxation. What a way to finish off the week.

Many of our students bowled strikes and a couple of them broke 100 points in a game!  JR Blackmun was our overall top bowler earning close to 200 points total for the two games. JR Also took first in his division.
What would bowling be without getting a strike? Several of our students were able to capture that feat at least once during their two games. The following students got a strike: Ashley Hayes, Jose Cantu, JR Blackmun, and Ben McNeese

Think Employment Summit at Vanderbilt

The morning of September 17th, the air was crisp, the sun was shinning and excitement was in the air as we drove to downtown Nashville to the Vanderbilt "Think Employment" Summit with TennesseeWorks!  Independence High School Students were all smiles as we approached a team of greeters at the Scarritt Bennett Center on Vanderbilt Campus. 

The conference was all about how to get a job and how to keep it.  Kaylea's favorite part of the Summit was getting video taped by the staff of Vanderbilt.  "I loved it!" Kaylea stated.

The students had a great time with getting breakfast before the keynote speakers began their lecture. Our students listened to Fiona Hawks talk about her life and how she lives independently and works for MTEMC.

Next, our students heard from a panel of their peers, discuss their experiences in the workforce. Students were able to ask the panel different questions about their life and their jobs. The panel explained how they got jobs and how they keep those jobs. They gave the students interview tips and on the job advice and advice for their lives beyond the school walls.

Also, our students had the opportunity to meet with small business owners and a job fair. We found out about different opportunities and which companies were hiring. Our students were able to pass out their resumes to the different companies represented. Jose, met the Old School Farms, Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Shop and others. Companies represented were: Goodwill, Holiday Inn, Walgreens, YMCA, Ben & Jerry's, Fifth Third Bank, Old School Farms, Embassy Suites, Center for Independent Living, The Belcourt, The Arc, Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, Tennessee Division of Rehabilitation Services and Tennessee Disability Pathfinder. For Kaylea, "I loved talking with the people from Old School Farm."

Then Vanderbilt University Media department interviewed our students about the seminar. Our students had a blast being interviewed about the seminar. All of our students did a fabulous job with their camera interviews. They were not shy in front of the camera!

Our students also participated in working on their 30 second Elevator Speech for a job. Students discussed amongst each other their strengths, words that best described them and their work experience. After they wrote it out, they had to present their speech to the group.

All of our students had a great time and came home with smiles on their faces. A new excitement for their lives after school was achieved after attending this seminar.  Proof is in the pictures!

Ashley's Creative Genius

Ashley did a wonderful job using her artistic skills to decorate our classroom door for Fall.  She colored some pumpkins and a spider.  She also made a wreath and covered the door in yellow paper.  The final result is 100% thanks to her design and follow through!

Zakk's response to the Employment Summit

Ms. Huffmaster: "What did you think of the keynote speaker, Fiona?"
Zakk: "She was very interesting and had an intriguing background.  I learned that I should not give up on finding a job."

Ms. Huffmaster: "How did conference change your perspective."
Zakk: "It made me more confident to speak in front of groups."

Ms. Huffmaster:  "Before we attended the conference we prepared a resume to take with us.  What did this process teach you?"
Zakk:  "You feel more prepared to apply for jobs.  I still need to gain experience, though."

Ms. Huffmaster: "Would you recommend that others attend this conference next year?"
Zakk: "Yes."

Ms. Huffmaster: "What would you tell other students who did not attend the conference?"
Zakk: "Be on time to your job. Don't act out. Ask for accommodations"

Ms. Huffmaster: "What is one thing you would like to learn at the conference next year?"
Zakk: "How to ask an employer for accommodations.  I would like to talk with more employers at the conference."

Class: Resume / Profile

Today in class our IHS Transition II Students began work on making a resume for themselves. All the students learn how they can use different styles of resumes to make their resumes unique. The students had a great time when Mrs. Huffmaster went around the room and asked each student to give one personality trait for each student in the class. "Happy" "Hard Worker" "Funny" "Caring" were just a few examples that each student gave towards their fellow classmates. Every student was so blown away by the great compliments that each gave of them.

Today: Graceworks and Habitat ReStore Visits

 This is Zakk Sellers. Today we took a trip into Franklin to visit a couple of different stores that I may be working at in the near future. We visited Graceworks and Habitat ReStore.
Graceworks is a store that helps the local community by providing clothing, furniture, food and financial help at very reasonable prices. When people come into the store to purchase items that money goes to help the locals in the community that need assitance with food and clothing. I enjoyed my time at Graceworks. We were given a tour of the whole facility and were able to see how their business is ran. I like the food pantry area.

After we visited Graceworks, we went to the Habitat ReStore. It's a large wareshouse that sells discounted housewares, appliances, furniture and lighting. All the money raised through the sells of the products in the store go towards the cost of building Habitat houses in the local community and throughout the state. Although, it was full of good home products I was not interested in this being a future worksite for me.

Employee Survey Project: 9/2/14

Today the Independence Transition students continued to visit local businesses with a job survey questionaire. Each location that they visited today the students found an employee to ask questions about the job(s) that each employed performs at that business.
Today the IHS students headed to Franklin, TN to visit a few different businesses. They went to Big Lots, Trees and Trends, and Aldi grocery store.

One of our students, Zakk Sellers, went on the trip and found it to be educational to see the opportunities that exist for those looking for employment. However, when asked about which location he thought he may enjoy working in the future "I really would not feel comfortable working at any of the locations at this time," according to Zakk.
However, all three locations had signs for possible employment opportunities. Aldi was starting associates at $10/hour.
Each location had part -time and full time positions avaliable.  There are different shifts for each location for each position available. Stockers may come in early in the morning, several hours before the store opens, to make sure all areas are ready for opening by 9AM.
However, Zakk did enjoy Aldi's because of a great find of real German Chocolate at a "very reasonable price."
Next time, Zakk hopes to visit a video game store or electronics store.

Employer Survey Project

Jose and Nila at the Target Kiosk looking for job openings

Today we went to Target, GameStop, Moes Southwest Grill, Hibbitts Sports, and Rue 21.
At Target we interviewed a number of people.  Each student group filled out a questionaire made up of eight questions that helped us learn about the different opportunities at the stores.
At Target:

• There are many types of jobs.  Their computers at the front of the store outline 10-15 different types of positions a person can apply for that include: cusomer service, management, food services, pharmacists, grocery, cashier, stocker, and asset management.
• New employees begin at minimum wage and can progress to make up to $100,000 a year.
• There are three shifts most individuals work.
• Most employees work part-time.  Only salaried employees are considered full-time.
• Employees can earn personal days according to the amount of hours they work.  They are not offered medical insurance but can purchase medical insurance through the company. 
• New employees are drug tested.

GameStop:

• There are three main positions at GameStop: sales associate, management, owner.
• The starting pay is $7.25 an hour.
• Employees can work both part-time and full time employees
• Employees need to be at least 16 years old.
• If you are a full-time employee you are elligible for health ensurance, sick pay and holiday pay.
• You only need to be drug tested for assistant manager positiona and higher.
